Vitamin E is a classification for a family of molecules that can be separated into two groups: tocopherols and tocotrienols. Vitamin E that occurs naturally, as found in nature and unesterified, has eight different forms. Tocopherols are a four part complex consisting of Alpha, Beta, Gamma, Delta Tocopherols. The four tocotrienols, alpha, beta, gamma and delta tocotrienol. Tocotrienols are converted into the four Tocopherol forms, which the body recognizes and can use. The tocopherol complex (Alpha, Beta, Gamma, Delta) works together as a synergistic family, making up the substance known as vitamin E.

Alpha-tocopherol is the most known part of the family. Natural vitamin e spelled Tocopherol means the natural form while Tocopheryl means the synthetic, esterified or isolated from it's natural complex. Natural Vitamin e on a bottle will show as d-alpha-tocopherol and members of it's complex. A synthetic will read dl-alpha-tocopheryl.

Vitamin E is a fat-soluble vitamin. It is an essential nutrient.
